I have had 4 surgeries on my ankle and I was in a car accident and sustained a small back injury. I’m trying to get back in shape and need help with some low impact exercise programs I can do at home. My ankle is pretty weak as I only have a tendon from a toe holding it together so it can not take too much strain which makes it hard to do cardio. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Having had ankle injuries and knee injuries myself, and having gone through lots of physical therapy, I can help. If you’re looking for cardio, there are a few great exercices that you can do on your living room floor. There is one called the Supine Bicycle. Lay on your back, place your hands behind your head, bend your legs at the hip, and knees to look as if you were sitting in a chair. Now, bring your left knee up to your chest, your right elbow down to your knee, and then the alternate back to your right knee/left elbow. After the elbow hits the knee, straighten your leg out. The motion should look as if you were pedaling a bike. Great for cardio, will be a little difficult to start, so do it for 5 min, then a week or so later, 8 min, keep adding time as you ease into it. To strengthen the ankle itself, try writting the alphabet with your toes whenever you are just sitting there. It’s great for mobility, and it works the kinks out. Rubber band restrictive exercises are great for ankles, and balance exercises are good too. Try taking turns alternating between feet, balancing on one foot. After that gets easier, make big circles with your arms while balancing on one foot, the constant changing of balance is going to strengthen your ankles. I learned these and many more in physical therapy. I know it’s expensive, but I’m running two miles in under 14 min again. It works man, check it out.
